Camille at Simplify and
Carrie of Miss Rosies fame have a challenge to do a post about your first completed quilt and your last....okay here it goes!
Well it's not my very first quilt, but it's close. The first quilt was actually
Eleanor Burns May Basket pattern and it was given to my niece when she was born and then I made the same pattern for my first daughter when she was born 7 months later. I don't have those quilts anymore or pictures of them so I thought I'd show you one that was right up there among the first quilts.

It's so ugly isn't it....I actually never really liked this quilt...remember this was probably 19 years ago and the fabric was purchased at Walmart and I quilted it myself on my little Kenmore. You know what though, this quilt has been used by my family more than any other quilt that I've made. It's the "picnic quilt" and it's been camping, to outdoor concerts, 4th of July and it's covered up more than one sick girl around here. It's also been washed and dried more times than I can count and it's still in one piece, sort of!
Okay here's a picture of the second to last quilt that I finished totally(the last one was my Mom's basket quilt and the pictures are terrible).

Yes it's my
Dear Jane I'm sure that some of you have seen many versions of this quilt on many blogs around the world, but mine is supposed to look like the orginal. I've started a new DJ quilt, but I haven't had time to work on it in such a long time...I will get back to it though. I really loved making this quilt and it was challenging at times and I feel like I grew as a quiltmaker.
So there you have it...one of my first quilts and one of my last. And since this post is about first quilts and my sister was here for a few days this week learning to quilt here are a couple of pictures of her first quilt (there will be 2 first quilts as I wanted to teach her to cut and piece and she had a pattern picked out that was fusible buttonhole applique that just happens to be a
Simplify pattern).

Here is a picture of Pamela hard at work.

We had so much fun and I hope that she learned a lot and will keep sewing. Just wish we lived closer so we could get together more often....
Well this post is long enough...time to get busy!

I don't think that quilt is ugly, at all. I think it is beautiful.
I like the look of your blog.
Hope you are getting a break from the heat!
I actually quite like your first quilt!!!
i'd share my first one done but the first one I ever did, I didn't take photos of and I haven't finished one since then ( it was around 20 years ago!).
Glad you had a nice time with your sister.
that first quilt has so many memories all over it! it pretty much makes me emotional thinking of my childhood just seeing a picture of it! you're so talented and i'm so glad we have quilting in common! love you bunches :)
i am totally in awe of the Dear Jane ... but the other one touches my heart - i'm a sucker for quilts that hug people with love

You can't kill that first quilt so it must have been put together well. I don't like my pink and blue either. It's to do with the colour and fabrics that were around then. As for the Dear Jane, wow!
Your sister's first quilt is going to be gorgeous.
Hi Ranette ~ From Eleanor's Quilt in a Day to Dear Jane's Quilt in a Lifetime! That's quite a journey but seeing your beautiful quilt proves that it is well worth it!
I love that Bliss quilt too and I can't wait to see your finished Andalucia quilt! I love that fabric.
Thank you for sharing your quilts and your stories!
Wow, you have come a long way since your first quilt. I think your Dear Jane is the first I have seen finished. I have seen a lot out on the blogs.
They are both fabulous. I am glad to hear that you use your first quilt.
Isn't that what they are for?
How fun that you are teaching your sister to quilt.
I had so much fun learning how to make a quilt with you. I hope my first quilt gets as much love as yours has. Thank you so much for all of your help. I am so glad that you are my sister.
Pamela
I think your first quilt is lovely but I think your Dear Jane is WOW.
You should be extremely proud of yourself for that.
Glad you enjoyed your sisters company, it is such fun sharing a day quilting.
Ranette ~ I love your Dear Jane Quilt, what an accomplishment! Congrats,
~ Dawn
I love your quilts and isn't it that way that quilts that are used so much are incredibly loved! Thanks for sharing your quilts!
I admire your beautiful DJ Quilt.
I finished all blocks and 18 triangles. Hope mine will be finished next year.
